The Game Goes On

Jason

“The game that I won. The one that says that you belong to me until the end of the evening?”

“I do not know another game.” Emma sat on the chair in front of me.

“Are you sure you want to play?” I looked at her face and her reddish cheeks.

“I do, even though you cheated and did not let me beat you.”

“Are you sure you want to continue?” With the game? To be with me? With what is going on between us?

“I’m sitting here in front of you, aren’t I?”

“It seems to me that I have decided you must not be at my height.” I looked at her and smiled, hesitating.

“Well?” She asked, but began to blush, apparently realizing she was sitting on a chair at the same height.

Emma rose slowly, as if thinking of what to do next, and I thought I might have exaggerated with this stupid game and that I should cancel it, but just then the waiter arrived to take our order, and Emma stood up and ordered coffee and mushroom quiche, talking to him and smiling at me, all flushed.

“At least he didn’t throw us out of his café,” I smiled at her.

“Wait a minute, sir, I’ll be right back.” And she disappeared out of the café and into the street, surprising me.

Emma

I rushed outside, feeling my face turn red, but I did not intend to give up. I would find a solution. While standing outside the café, I looked around at the fallen leaves scattered on the sidewalk, at the bookstore next to the café, but it was closed now. Opposite the café was a newsstand, and I crossed the street, looking for a moment at the colorful magazines hanging on top of each other and buying one.

Jason

Emma came back through the doorway with a smile, placing a magazine on her chair, sits on it and smiling at me.

“We are no longer at the same height, and I am taller than you,” she made a face at me and I laughed.

“Come and sit next to me.”

She got up, took her magazine, placed it on the chair next to me, sat on it, and we held hands, waiting for our food to arrive.

Emma

“Tell me something about yourself,” I asked Jason, “even something small.”

I realized that I knew nothing about him, I had no idea where he would go at the end of the evening.

“What would you like to know?” I want to know everything about you, but I will not ask for that. I will ask something really small.

“What hotel are you sleeping in?” I wonder if your room is as small as mine, with a bed almost touching the window and a tiny bathroom.

“I do not sleep in a hotel.” I knew it, he has some other woman, his French whore who waits for him at the end of the evening. I’m so stupid, he’s just hanging out with me out of pity. I want to pull back my hand from his palm, but then he will realize that I am not easygoing.
